Reference to Küssaburg castle occurs first between 888 and 892.
In 1525 the peasants of Klettgau county under commander Klaus Wagner of Griessen besieged the castle two times. The Peasants´ War in southwest Germany came to an end with the final defeat of the Klettgau contingent in the fields near Rafz on 4 November 1525. Count Rudolf von Sulz punished his subjects with outmost cruelty.
During the Thirty Years War the Austrian troops abandoned the castle and set it on fire when Swedish troops approached. Henceforth the castle has fallen into ruin.
